Abstract
This study explores the potential of Korean philosophy from the perspective of the intersection of science and spirituality. To this end, it analyses the early thought of Dasŏk Ryu Young-mo (1890–1981), a seminal Korean religious thinker, by examining primary materials from his youth. As a young man, Ryu Young-mo, influenced by the Taishō vitalism of Japan, sought to construct a Korean self-understanding—namely, a Korean philosophy—articulated through the languages of science and spirituality. This endeavour was expressed in his philosophy of non-dualistic life. Through the interweaving of science and spirituality, the young Ryu Young-mo described non-dualistic life as aiming for an interdependent, organic, and self-originating complete life. The specific dimensions of this philosophy included: the evolving transcendent life; the sacred life of non-dualistic interconnection; the life of return to the One (歸一) oriented towards the cosmos; and the mystical life of duration and the moment. This study demonstrates how, through the interweaving of science and spirituality, the content of Korean philosophy as constructed by the young Ryu Young-mo was formulated as a mode of Korean self-understanding. Furthermore, it elucidates how the language of natural science—what can be spoken— is able to reveal that which must remain silent, namely, the dimension of mystery.
