Abstract

This paper examines the chapters "The Will of Heaven"[天志] and "Verification Ghosts"[明鬼], which are evaluated as having somewhat heterogeneous properties throughout Mozi. "The Will of Heaven" and "Verification Ghosts" have a unique structure that combines transcendent elements and ethical purposes. These passages have sparked controversy among scholars because they lack the same level of logic and rationality found throughout the rest of Mozi. In this article, it is revealed that the concept of Heaven and ghosts, transcendent beings presented by Mozi, was not a simple religious belief but a moral and philosophical device to encourage ethical practice. Mozi viewed Heaven as a personal deity who makes moral judgments and distributes rewards and punishments, while ghosts were seen as beings that specifically carry out the will of Heaven. Despite these transcendent concepts, Mozi's primary aim was to promote individual moral action and maintain social order, not to establish an afterlife or an absolute faith. He elevated righteousness[義] to the highest value and defined his doctrine of ‘Universal Love’[兼愛] and ‘Mutual Benefit’[交利] as the will of Heaven. In doing so, he sought to establish universal moral standards amidst political and social chaos. Mozi also prioritized virtuous conduct over religious rituals like ancestral sacrifices. He even suggested that these ceremonies could foster social cohesion by promoting fellowship and interaction among family and neighbors. Therefore, "The Will of Heaven" and "Verification Ghosts" chapters were not intended for religious faith alone. They were a means for practical moral action, deeply rooted in the Mohist philosophy of social reform.
