Abstract
The visible face is reduced to knowledge and confined in the objectal framework. The invisible face, however, escapes the general order of meaning and overflows its own form. This face has its meaning in itself. That is to say, it marks the origin of ethics. Here, we will refer to Levinas' conception of and essential meaning of the face; it is not captured as part of our visual experience. Furthermore, the way (face) that the other presents himself, reveals the infinity as well as the miserable life of the other. In the face-to-face, the naked face of the other therefore overthrows the order of interest toward the self because it presents the true essence of man, forcing one to answer for the other. This is the ethical request of the other. Above all, this is the appeal of the other: "You shall not commit murder.”
