Abstract

This study examines the theories of human nature put forth by Ogyu Sorai and his disciple, Dazai Shundai, who were key figures of the Kobunji-kakuha (古文辭學 派) which played a significant role in the development of Confucian thought during the mid-Edo period in Japan. On the surface, much like the actions of some contemporary scholars classified as 'Kokaku-ha,' they rejected the metaphysical epistemology and theory of human nature established by Neo-Confucianism and followed the theory of human nature and cultivation from ancient Confucian thought, embodied by Confucius. On one hand, this appears to assert the original intent of Confucianism as a study of statecraft and practical application, as proposed by a group of Confucian scholars during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. However, it actually exhibits a unique order reflecting the distinctive cultural and ideological particularities of Edo-period Japan. By exploring these theories, I aim to shed light on the unique view of social order that was applied to the cultural value ideologies of the Edo shogunate regime and society. This view justifies a vertical class order by logically articulating two claims: the diversity and immutability of human nature and the deficiency of proactive moral cultivation of individuals. It advocates for a return to the origins of traditional Confucian thought, yet, by shedding the core aspects of its essence, it results in a 'instrumentalization' of the thought. Furthermore, it aligns with the theories of the school of law (法家) from ancient China, creating an intrinsic coherence, which allows for an anti-Confucian aspect to coexist within their philosophical perspectives.
