Abstract
This paper examines the historical transformations of the concept of transcendence explored by philosophers and investigates their value and significance in the context of the civilizational transition of the 21st century. It first considers Plato’s philosophical insights that initially defined the meaning of transcendence, then analyzes Kant’s concept of transcendence as a symbolic expression of modern anthropocentrism, and finally explores Roy Bhaskar’s philosophy of MetaReality, which rethinks transcendence within the unfolding of a new civilization in the 21st century. The 21st century calls for a practical transcendence that overcomes the limits of anthropocentrism and enables co-presence with the Other. The scope of this Other includes not only human beings but also non-human life forms, inanimate matter, ecosystems, and even machine entities such as artificial intelligence agents. Contemporary civilization must therefore seek multifaceted practices of co-presence with non-human others.
