초록

To understand individual congressional behavior, scholars have examined determinants such as ethnic/racial identification, education, political experience, and leadership position in Congress. However, they have studied primarily the characteristics of white male members of legislative bodies. In this paper, I explore not only what social and demographic characteristics Asian American congressmen have but also other determinants such as institutional experience characteristics. These are compared to those of average congressmen. To do this, I examine twenty eight Asian American elected members in Congress from 1957 to 2013 in terms of the following ten categories: 1) proportion of Asian Americans in Congress, 2) ethnicity, 3) regional distribution (district), 4) age, 5) gender, 6) education, 7) previous job, 8) party identification, 9) term (years) of service, 10) committee appointments.
