초록
Previous studies on cultural elements in the field of Chinese-Korean translation usually adopted the classification method by Stolze and applied Venuti’s concepts of “domestication” and “foreignization.” The investigator arranged translation strategies by reviewing previous studies and applied them to real translation cases. In the study, Yu-hua’s Chronicle of a Blood Merchant was analyzed as it was a proper text to examine the changing patterns of translation strategies over time after its revision and resulting translation changes. The study reviewed the translation patterns of the novel’s cultural elements and found the prominent use of Sino-Korean words in general, which is attributed to the fact that both Korea and China are in the cultural zone of Chinese characters. It is needed to replace homograph words in Chinese with Korean expressions. The recent versions showed a tendency of removing markings in Chinese characters and usually applied transliteration for food or place names. As a result, there were extremely diverse cultural elements under the category of “real asymmetry” by Stolze. The choice of translation strategies depended much on contexts and the degree of “cognitive accumulation.” Although previous studies proposed to explain the meanings of proverbs and idioms for their translation, the text analyzed in the study delivered the original expressions as they were and supplemented them in meanings. Although “omission” increased legibility, it also weakened the effects of “repetition,” which is the author’s main narrative method. The expressions arbitrarily added by the translator led to some differences in meanings between the original text and the translation. Future studies on cultural elements are expected to supplement the present study by reviewing much more cases.
