한일교류 천만 시대의 착시현상: 접촉이론을 통해 본 한일교류의 현황과 과제

본 연구에서는 한일 교류의 증가 및 활성화에도 불구하고, 양국 인식 개선 및 관계 증진으로 이루어지지 않는 현상에 의문을 제기하며, 그 이유를 접촉이론을 통해 분석해 보았다. 이를 위해 한일교류의 대표적 지표인 상호방문(관광), 유학, 취업, 결혼 등의 수치 분석을 통해 양국간 교류 현황을 파악하고, 접촉이론의 관점에서 이를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 한일교류의 절대적 수치는 증가하였지만, 상대적 수치 및 비율이 감소하여 실제로 는 한일교류가 정체 혹은 감소하고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 한일간의 교류에는 한국인과 일본인 사이의 불균형과 편중현상이 나타나고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 접촉 이론에 따르면, 서로 다른 그룹간 인식 변화 및 개선을 위해서는 일정 수준의 조건(친밀 감 형성, 동등한 지위, 공동의 목표, 제도적 지원 등)에 부합하는 교류가 필요한데, 현재 의 한일교류는 이러한 조건이 충족되는 교류가 충분히 이루어지고 있다고 보기는 어렵 다. 따라서 현재의 한일교류로는 한일이해 증진 및 한일관계 개선을 기대하기 어려우며, 향후 보다 체계적이고, 계획성있는 교류가 필요하다고 여겨진다.
Abstract
In this study, I have utilized the contact theory to analyze the reasons why bilateral perception and relations have not improved despite the increase in the people-to-people exchanges between Korea and Japan. To address this research question, I first researched the representative indicators, such as mutual visits, study abroad, employment, and marriage, which show the history and current status of the people-to-people exchanges between the countries. Second, I analyzed these indicators from the perspective of the inter-group contact theory. The results explain that, though the absolute number of exchanges between Korea and Japan has increased, the relative number and ratio have decreased, indicating a significant reduction in mutual exchanges. In addition, the results show that the exchange between Korea and Japan shows an imbalance and bias. According to the contact theory, to change and improve perceptions among different groups, exchanges that meet certain criteria (such as affinity formation, equal status, common goal, institutional support, etc.) are necessary, and it was confirmed that the current people-to-people exchanges between Korea and Japan are insufficient. This shows that it is difficult to expect the current exchanges to enhance understanding and improve relations between the two countries.
