초록

This study excavates three early dance anthropologists who are hitherto marginalized, and yet recently recast as postmodern pioneers: Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, and Maya Deren. They traversed many disciplinary boundaries including dance, anthropology and film, while holding multiple identities including artists, scholars, educators and social activists. Conducting their fieldwork on Afro-Caribbean dance culture, they pursued subjectivity, reflexivity, and active participation to the level unprecedented in its time. Considering that they were excluded from the genealogy of anthropology and dance anthropology due to this relentless career, this study examines their postmodern significance for critical dance studies.
