The purpose of this study is to understand and interpret a Korean dance performance through Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. A dance performance by the National Dance Company of Korea “Soul, Sunflower” was selected for this purpose. Gadamer points out the limitation of applying an objective methodology such as natural sciences to humanities, sociology, and arts, thus he endeavors to explain the human understanding itself philosophically. Based on this under standing, linguistic elements of dance was divided into the past prospect and the present prospect and an inquiry of the contents and meaning was pursued accordingly. Thereafter, it was investigated whether tradi tional elements were accepted or modified.
