초록
This study reinterprets nineteenth-century Argentine nation state formation as a process shaped by selective inclusion and systematic exclusion rather than national integration. While the state promoted universal citizenship through constitutional reforms, education, conscription, and immigration policy, meaningful incorporation was largely limited to urban elites and European-descended populations. Indigenous peoples, Afro-Argentines, gauchos, rural workers, and women were marginalized through violence, disciplinary control, statistical erasure, and gendered citizenship norms. The study argues that Argentina’s nation-building relied on constructing hierarchical boundaries that defined who counted as a full citizen.
Abstract
This study reinterprets nineteenth-century Argentine nation state formation as a process shaped by selective inclusion and systematic exclusion rather than national integration. While the state promoted universal citizenship through constitutional reforms, education, conscription, and immigration policy, meaningful incorporation was largely limited to urban elites and European-descended populations. The study argues that Argentina’s nation-building relied on constructing hierarchical boundaries that defined who counted as a full citizen.
