본 연구에서는 국제원유가격변동에 따른 한국, 영국, 미국 등 3개국의 석유제품소비자가격의 반응을 비대칭 모형을 이용하여 분석, 비교하였다. 특히 분석대상을 휘발유로 한정한 기존연구와는 달리 석유소비의 대표적 유종인 등유와 경유를 분석에 추가하였으며 연산품의 특성을 반영하기 위하여 세 가지 유종 가격을 각각의 소비량으로 가중 평균한 종합유종가를 산출하여 비대칭성 분석을 시도하였다. 분석모형은 오차수정모형을 이용한 Borenstein et.al(1997)의 비대칭모형을 이용하였으며 분석기간은 유가연동제 이후 기간인 1994년 1월부터 2004년 12월까지 11년의 월별평균가격을 대상으로 하였다. 분석 결과, 국내석유제품가격은 경유에서만 국제유가의 하락에 대한 반응이 약 1개월 후에 나타나는 시간적 비대칭이 존재하였으며, 영국은 휘발유와 경유에서 국제유가의 상승에 더 크게 반응하는 양적 비대칭이 나타났으며 미국은 모든 유종에서 대칭적인 움직임을 보였다.
Abstract
Petroleum product prices have been known to respond more quickly to increase in crude oil spot prices than to decrease. This paper re-examines and compares price asymmetries of petroleum products in three countries: Korea, UK and USA. Relative to the previous studies, we test price asymmetries not only in gasoline markets but also in kerosene and diesel markets, as representative product in all three countries. This study also analyzes all three products together using composite price concept, a weighted average of the three product prices, since petroleum products are joint products from the same crude oil refining process. The results show that Korea has weak timing asymmetry in diesel, UK has strong amount asymmetry in gasoline and diesel and USA has symmetry in all products.
