Abstract
Violent extremism and terrorism became one of the most serious problems to most of the societies in the world. Thus, it is an urgent agenda to scholars and filed authorities to understand the correlates and risk factors influencing on violent extremist radicalization. Therefore, the study has a purpose to examine whether past extremist group activity experiences of an individual is associated with their future violent extremism group activity involvement. Furthermore, this study aims to examine socio-demographic factors relevant to radicalization for extremism and terrorist activities such as gender, education level, socio-economic status. To fulfill the purpose of this current study, it utilized a set of data collected by START center. Using a randomized probability sampling methods, this data collected research panel that is designed to be representative of the entire US population (n=429). Especially, this study conduct a two by two between subject experimental design test due to the original designed of collection of the dataset. Originally, respondent were randomly placed in an experimental group or a control group. Each group was asked a series of questions involving past and future activism/radicalism, questions of grievances held with the government, and respondents’ attitude toward law enforcement in a different sequences. The analysis results revealed that past non-violent group activities predicted future non-violent group activities. Grievances against government were related with both of future non-violent and violent group activities. Moreover, the findings suggested that past violent group activities were associated with future violent group activities. Finally, the analysis showed that gender, education, and family income were significantly associated with violent group activities in the future. The contributions, limitations and suggestions for the future research were discussed in conclusion and discussion.
