모리박물관 소장 산수도 연구 －양식과 국적이 오인되었던 조선 초기 산수도의 일례(一例)로서－

본 논문은 일본의 야마구치현(山口県) 호후시(防府市) 모리박물관(毛利博 物館)에 소장되어 있는 미우인 필(米友仁筆) 삼폭대(三幅對) <산수도(山水圖)>(이하<모리박물관장 삼폭산수도>)를 다각적으로 연구·분석한다. 이를 통하여 이 산수도가 화풍적으로 조선 초기(1392~1550) 산수도의 다양성을 보여주고, 주제적으로는조선 초기의 제화시(題畵詩) 속에 등장하는 소상팔경도(瀟湘八景圖)의 화제(畵題)와소상팔경도가 아닌 그림의 주제가 함께 하나의 산수도 세트를 이룬 예가 될 수있는 현존 회화 작품임을 제안하였다. <모리박물관장 삼폭산수도>의 소장사(所藏史)는 다음과 같이 추정할 수 있었다. 이 작품이 조선에서 제작되어 무로마치시대(室町時代, 1336~1573) 서일본의 강력한다이묘(大名)였던 오우치씨(大內氏)를 통해 일본으로 유입된 것으로 추정된다. 1550 년 경 중반 오우치씨의 갑작스런 몰락의 때에 모리 모토나리(毛利元就, 1497~1571) 에게 넘겨져 모리가(毛利家)로 유입된 후, 모리가에서 대대로 전래되다가 근대기세워진 모리가문의 보고(寶庫)인 모리박물관의 소장품으로 자연스럽게 귀속된 것으로 생각된다. 조선 초기 산수도임에도 불구하고, 현재 이 작품에는 ‘중국 송대(宋代) 미우인(米友仁, 1052~1107)’이 그린 세폭이 세트 그림, 즉, ‘삼폭대(三幅對)’ 산수도라고 쓰인 묵서(墨書)가 있다. 본 연구를 통해 <모리박물관장 산수도>가 무로마치시대 오우치가문에서 삼폭대의 형식으로 개장된 후, 에도시대(江戶時代, 1603~ 1868)에 고화(古 畵)를 감정하고 그 내용을 기록하는 것이 유행하였을 때 조선화로서의 국적을잃고 중국의 유명화가인 송대 미우인의 그림으로 감정된 것을 추론할 수 있었다. 현존하는 상당수의 조선 초기 회화작품 가운데 상당수가 중국이나 일본 그림으로전해지고 있는데, <모리박물관장 산수도>는 이러한 그림들의 형식과 국적이 변화된 이유에 대한 단서를 제공해 줄 수 있는 매우 중요한 작품으로 생각된다.
Abstract
This article examines a set of three hanging scrolls in the Mōri Museum of Art in Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan, entitled “Landscapes.” Although the set is traditionally attributed to the Chinese master Mi Youren(1075~1151) based on the title inscriptions on their boxes, “Landscapes” differs stylistically from that of Mi Youren’s works and of Song dynasty(960~1279) painting. The painting style of “Landscapes” is inspired by the monumental landscape tradition of Northern Song master, Guo Xi(ca. 1020~ca. 1090), which was revived during the early Ming dynasty(1368~1644). With a thorough investigation of the subject matter, painting style and the contemporary historical and cultural context, this article asserts that “Landscapes” are paintings of early Joseon dynasty(1392~1910). Examining the provenance of “Landscapes”, I provide a possible transmission of the paintings from Korea to Japan and then track their history within Japan. I conclude that “Landscapes” was originally part of a set of paintings transmitted to Japan as a result of the relationship between the Joseon court and the Oūchi clan, a powerful daimyō in west Japan in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. After which, “Landscapes” came into the possession of Mōri Motonari(1497~1571) and remained as a family heirloom to become part of the collection of the Mōri Museum of Art. Finally, this article traces how these three paintings were changed from their original format and made into a triptych, a popular format in Japan’s Muromachi period(1392~1573). Additionally, I discuss the process in which Edo period(1603~1867) Japanese connoisseurs erroneously reattributed “Landscapes” to Chinese Mi Youren paintings, resulting in the loss of their Korean identification.
