Abstract
Zhang Daqian (張大千, 1899–1983) was born in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, and emerged as one of the most influential Chinese painters of the 20th century. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he began a life in exile, residing successively in Hong Kong, Brazil, the United States, and Taiwan until his death in 1983. During this time, he gained international acclaim, particularly from the late 1950s onward while living in Brazil, where he pioneered a semi-abstract landscape style through the innovative ‘splashed ink and color (發墨發彩)’ technique. This distinctive approach became a hallmark of his later work. This paper examines the formation and development of Zhang Daqian’s late style, analyzing the historical and artistic contexts that enabled its emergence. The discussion is structured around two major phases of his life: his period in China and his subsequent years abroad. Key influences on this stylistic evolution include the prevalence of boneless style painting in the Chinese art world during his early career, his extensive two-year experience copying Buddhist murals in Dunhuang, his encounter with Western abstract art during his time in South America, and the aesthetic preferences of Chinese collectors in the United States and Taiwan who favored traditional style. Through a career that bridged East and West, Zhang Daqian demonstrated an exceptional ability to assimilate diverse artistic traditions and trends. His later works, shaped by rigorous study and creative experimentation, reflect the dynamic cross-cultural exchanges of the 20th century. As such, they offer valuable insight into a pivotal era of global artistic hybridity and transformation.
