Abstract

This study examines sixteen previously overlooked portraits of women painted by Chae Yong-sin (蔡龍臣, 1850–1941), shedding light on their characteristics and historical significance within his artistic oeuvre. These portraits primarily depict elderly wives of prominent families in the Jeollabuk-do region, with fourteen subjects shown in everyday attire and two dressed in ceremonial wonsam and floral coronets. While the production of women’s portraits was severely restricted in both royal and private contexts during the late Joseon dynasty, Chae Yong-sin utilized modern technologies—photography and railroads—at the dawn of the twentieth century to create portraits of nonmeritorious individuals, including women, whose images had traditionally been excluded from portraiture. This study highlights how Chae collaborated with his son and daughterin- law, both photographers, to produce these female portraits, and how relocating his studio near a railroad line enabled him to expand his clients base across the Honam Line region. Ultimately, these portraits, commissioned for ritual and ancestral purposes, visually reinforced Confucian norms as they merged with modern technologies. This case demonstrates not only how modern tools transformed artistic production, but also how they served as a turning point in expanding the traditionally male-centered realm of portraiture to include women.
