Abstract

This essay examines the authenticity of Pigeon on a Peach Branch by the Northern Song emperor Huizong (r. 1100-1125), now in a private collection, Tokyo, Japan, that has been highly evaluated and designated as a national treasure. In 1979, the eminent art historian and connoisseur in Chine painting Xu Bangda (1911-2012) published a seminal article that deals with the authenticity of paintings by Huizong. He argued that 70-80% of paintings known to be by Huizong were actually created by his ghost-painters. He further argued that such famous paintings as Five-Colored Parakeet on a Blossoming Apricot Tree (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), Cranes of Good Omen (Liaoning Provincial Museum), and Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) were brushed by his ghost-painters, probably court painters in the Imperial Academy of Painting. Xu’s article laid the foundation for the study of Huizong as a painter. In 1984, following in the footsteps of Xu, Suzuki Kei (1920-2007) regarded Pigeon on a Peach Branch as a later-period painting. He argued that Huizong’s seal, inscription, and cipher appeared to be all forged and the pigeon in the painting showed flatness and non-reality. The format of Pigeon on a Peach Branch is a single-paged album leaf, a format that was rarely used or non-existent during the reign of Huizong. This format gained enormous popularity during the Southern Song period (1127-1279). The Southern Song court painters Ma Yuan (active ca. 1190-1225) and Ma Lin (ca. 1180-after 1256) were masters of short paintings in the format of a single-paged album leaf whose compositions showed birds and tree branches that were diagonally placed. Pigeon on a Peach Branch is thought to be painted in the manner of Ma Yuan and Ma Lin after the mid-thirteenth century. Given that Pigeon on a Peach Branch is not painted by Huizong, the authenticity of paintings by the emperor raises a fundamental question. Is there any authentic painting by Huizong?
