Abstract
Supply chains are inherently exposed to various risks, including socio-economic changes, human-made disruptions, and natural disasters, leading to fluctuations in demand and instability in leadtimes. Information sharing among supply chain participants has been widely recognized as an effective strategy to mitigate supply chain uncertainty, enhance efficiency, and reduce costs. This study models a multi-echelon military supply chain using actual transactional data of repair parts and evaluates the effects of demand information sharing under different disruption scenarios. A system dynamics-based simulation is employed to compare a traditional supply chain model without information sharing and an information- sharing model in response to demand and lead time disruptions. Simulation results show that in a no-disruption scenario, the information-sharing model reduced total inventory by approximately 15% compared to the non-sharing model. In a leadtime disruption scenario where leadtimes doubled, the information-sharing model exhibited only a marginal inventory increase of 1%, whereas the non-sharing model suffered a substantial inventory surge of 46%. Similarly, in a demand disruption scenario where demand doubled, total inventory in the information-sharing model increased by 34%, while the non-sharing model saw an extreme inventory escalation of 215% demonstrating the severe amplification of the bullwhip effect in the absence of information sharing. These findings suggest that demand information sharing effectively mitigates inventory volatility and cost inefficiencies, particularly under disruption scenarios. Additionally, integrating information sharing with target-day optimization further enhances supply chain resilience. This study provides quantitative evidence of the benefits of information sharing in mitigating supply chain disruptions, particularly in multi-echelon military logistics networks. The findings suggest that implementing real-time information- sharing systems, such as an integrated monitoring framework and electronic point-of-sale systems, could significantly enhance supply chain efficiency and resilience.
