Abstract

City walls are important historic heritages to the walled cities such as Beijing, Xian, Nanjing and Seoul. They became the key elements of historic identity to the historic walled cities. The main objective of this study is to find out the major characteristics of the conservation plan for city walls in Nanjing and the implications to Seoul and other Korean historic walled cities. The major characteristics of the conservation plan for city walls in Nanjing are as follows. First, there are strict multi-layered conservation systems which protect city wall itself, their surrounding natural environments and beautiful scenery as a whole. Second, this plan provides not only strong regulations to protect city walls which are widely recognized as important historic heritages but also specific ideas to use city walls as tourist attractions by creating a ring-shaped ecological environments along the city walls as a result of bringing city walls and its scenic surroundings together. Nanjing’s systematic and comprehensive conservation plan for city walls has great implication for Seoul and other walled cities in Kroea which have not developed any appropriate conservation plans for city walls.
