Abstract
This study explores restaurant patterns and spatial distribution in Seoul and examines whether the diversity of restaurants is influenced by cultural capital of residents in the district. Omnivorous or cosmopolitan tastes have been a distinguished form of cultural capital in contemporary society. Ethnic restaurants, among diverse urban amenities, coincides tastes of urban elites who are particularly tolerant to various exotic foods. Firstly, this study explored the spatial distribution of restaurants in Seoul, which are varied in terms of their visitors’ evaluation score and cuisines. Next, this study compared foodscapes of each district in Seoul, presenting graduated symbol maps by different cuisines. Lastly, the author examined whether cultural capital of the population affects the diversity index of restaurants in the district. The result shows that cultural capital among residents, which is measured by average educational attainment in the district significantly increases the diversity of restaurants. As highly clustered in particular places, restaurants in Seoul are unequally distributed cultural resources. Ethnic restaurants are generating different foodscapes in districts with their cuisine and geographical location. The diversity of restaurants is corresponding to socioeconomic status of residents.
