Abstract

This study tried to suggest practical guidelines regarding instructor’s feedback and learners’ characteristics that should be considered in Facebook-based discussion. In order to accomplish the purpose, instructor’s feedback for Facebook-based discussion was designed and the effects of the feedback and learners’ self-regulated learning skills on college students’ achievement and participation in Facebook-based discussion were analyzed. In the fall semester of 2012, 116 college students enrolled in a general education course were divided into two groups by feedback provision and then each o the two groups were divided again according to their levels of self-regulated learning skills. The results indicate that instructor’s feedback has positive effects on the learners’ achievements. On the other hand, there was no difference in students’ participation between the feedback group and the non-feedback group. The group with higher self-regulated learning skills showed higher achievements and participation than the group with lower self-regulated learning skills. Finally, no effects were found in interaction between self-regulated learning skills of learners and the provision of the instructor’s feedback. This results indicate that the feedback designed in this study has positive effects on the achievements of all learners regardless of the levels of their self-regulated learning skills. It also suggests that instructors should consider students’ levels of self-regulated learning skills when compose groups for Facebook-based discussion.
