사이버대학 성인학습자의 멘토링 사례연구: 참여자의 경험을 중심으로

본 연구는 사이버대학 성인학습자들이 멘토링 프로그램에서 보인 경험을 사례연구 기법을 통하여 분석하였다. 성인학습자에 대한 멘토링의 교육적 의의가 작지 않음에도 불구하고 이와 관련된 사례가 제한적이어서 사이버 멘토링을 제대로 이해하기 쉽지 않다는 점에 연구의 필요성이 있다. 구체적인 연구문제로는 1) 이들의 참여동기, 2) 멘토링의 내용 및 상호작용 방식, 3) 멘토링이 멘토, 멘티에게 주는 영향력, 4) 장애요인 및 발전방향 등이 선정되었다. 본 연구는 국내 A 사이버대학의 B학과에서 2012-1부터 2년 동안 이루어진 멘토링 프로그램에 참여한 13명의 성인학습자를 연구대상자로 선정하였다. 각종 기록물, 이메일 면담, 초점면담 등을 통하여 수집된 자료는 귀납적 접근에 의하여 범주화된 후 패턴매칭논리를 통하여 분석되었다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이들이 멘토링에 참여하게 된 동기는 온라인 학습에 대한 적응 및 자기주도학습 능력의 향상 차원에서 이해될 수 있다. 둘째, 주요 활동으로는 인지적 측면(온라인 학습전략, 자기주도학습 전략)과 정서적 지원, 모델링 등이 포함되었으며 이는 경험학습이론과의 관련 속에서 의의가 있었다. 셋째, 상호작용의 방식은 멘토링의 내용에 따라 다양하였으나 멘티와의 관계에 따라 의사교환이 원활하게 이루어지지 못하는 경우도 있었다. 넷째, 프로그램 참여 후 멘토와 멘티 모두 긍정적인 변화를 경험하였으며 이는 협력적 발전이라는 멘토링의 의미가 반영된 결과인 것으로 보인다. 다섯째, 멘토링의 원활한 진행을 위해서는 멘토의 역량 강화, 멘티의 동기 제고, 지리적 거리를 고려한 멘토-멘티의 연결 등이 제안되었다. 본 연구는 사이버대학 성인학습자를 대상으로 하는 멘토링 프로그램에 대한 경험적 정보를 제공했다는 점에서 이론적, 실천적 의의가 있으나 사례연구의 특성상 결과의 일반화에서는 제한점을 갖는다.

Abstract

This study analyzed the experiences of adult learners who participated in a mentoring program based on case study approach. This study is meaningful because there have not been enough efforts for understanding the processes of cyber mentoring, while its educational value is not minimal. The specific purposes of this study were as follows: 1) participants' motivation, 2) activities and interaction, 3) influences of the program to the mentors and mentees, 4) barriers and recommendations. Thirteen adult learners who have joined in a mentoring program from a department of a cyber-university for two years from the 1st semester of 2012 participated in this study. The data from several documentations, e-mail interviews, and focused-interviews were analyzed with the pattern-matching-logic after categorized by an inductive approach. The results of the study were as follows. First, the participants' motivations were based on the need to adjust themselves to the online learning and enhance their self-directed learning abilities. Second, their main activities included cognitive activities(online learning and self-directed learning strategies), emotional support, and modeling, which were meaningful with the experience learning theory. Third, the types of interaction were various depending upon the activities, while the communication between mentors and mentees has not been effective in some cases. Fourth, almost every participant experienced positive changes after the program, while these changes could be results of collaborative development of mentoring. Finally, three recommendations were proposed for further programs as follows: strengthening of mentors' capabilities, enhancement of mentees' motivation, and matching of mentors and mentees considering their geographical distances. This study has theoretical and practical implications, in that it provided with empirical information of the mentoring program with adult learners in a cyber-university, while the generalization of the results is limited due to the methodological approach of case study.
