사이버대학에서의 동료지원 멘토링 프로그램의 효과: 재등록율, 학업성취도, 만족도 기준으로

초록

원격대학에서 학생들의 중도탈락율이 일반대학보다 높아 이에 대한 대책이 시급하다. 이를 위해 방송통신대학교에서 동료 학습자들 간의 멘토링 프로그램을 도입하였고 이어 사이버 대학들이 멘토링 프로그램을 도입하기 시작했다. 본 연구의 목적은 중도탈락율 감소를 위해 Y사이버 대학에서 개발 운영한 동료지원 멘토링 프로그램의 효과성을 검증하는 것이다. 멘토링 프로그램의 효과성은 참가자들의 재등록율, 학업 성취도 및 만족도를 기준으로 검증하였다. 데이터는 Y사이버대학에서 2007년과 2008년도의 4학기동안 운영되었던 멘토링 프로그램 참가자 998명 학생의 자료를 학교 시스템과 설문을 통해 수집하였다. 분석 결과 프로그램 참가자들의 재등록율은 83.37%로 불참자들(69.69%)보다 14.68% 더 높았다. 여학생의 참여가 높았고, 신입생이 편입생보다 재등록율이나 프로그램 참여율이 높았다. 멘토링 프로그램의 참여자들의 성적도 불참자보다 높았고 프로그램에 높은 만족도를 보여 97.85%의 멘토, 멘티가 멘토링 프로그램이 필요하다고 인식했다. 동료 멘토링 프로그램은 미래 21세기에 학습자가 준비해야 할 자기주도적 학습 및 협동학습과 같은 역량을 제공한다. 동료 멘토링 프로그램의 운영에 관한 제안이 제시되었다.

Abstract

The dropout rate at cyber universities is so high that its countermeasure should be considered. Korean National Open University introduced peer mentoring program and this gave positive influence on other cyber universities. The purpose of the study is to verify the effectiveness of peer mentoring program which is developed and operated at Y Cyber University to lower dropout rate. Its effectiveness is examined on the basis of re-registration rate, academic achievement and satisfaction level. Data collection is performed through surveys from 998 participation at the mentoring program over 4 semesters(2007-2008) and system data of Y Cyber University. Results show that participants had higher re-registration rate(83.37%) than those who did not(69.69%), which leads a wide gap. Interestingly more females participated than males and more freshmen than transferred students showed higher participation rate and re-registration rate. Also participants resulted higher academic achievement and satisfaction level than those who did not. 97.85% of mentors and metees perceived that the mentoring program was necessary. The implication of this peer mentoring program is to provide students with such essential competencies as self-directed learning and collaboration for the future 21st century. Recommendations for operating the peer mentoring program are suggested.
