Abstract
This study examined how different type of scaffolding influenced student interactions and the quality of discussion in the web-based discussion. The scaffolding type was devided into two forms: 1) the content supprotive scaffolding which offered examples, hints, or relevant contents to help students undersatnd the discussion topic, and 2) the self monitoring scaffolding which supported students metacognitive processes including plans, reflections, and evaluations. The results of the study were as follow. First, the content supportive scaffolding was more effective than the self monitoring scaffolding in terms of student interactions such as density in a group and individual's central influence in a small group. Second, the content supporting scaffolding was more effective than the self monitoring scaffolding in the quality of discussion articles derived from the web-based discussion. In conclusion, it was more effective to provide students with the content supportive scaffolding rather than the self monitoring scaffolding to support learners' interactions and the quality of discussion at the beginning of the web-based discussion.
