Abstract
The art infusion strategy, which evokes a positive response from consumers by injecting art images into product design, is now one of the representative strategies that can highlight the differentiation of products. However, recent studies show that the perception of luxury caused by art infusion can rather lead to negative consumer reactions. In this study, we reveal that art infusion has both positive and negative effects on consumer perceptions of the pleasure of consumption and the spending pain, and examine whether these consumer perceptions are changed by consumers' self-regulatory focus and social norms. Experimental results show that consumers with promotion focus have positive purchase intentions by recognizing more the pleasure of consumption for products injected with art images, but those with prevention focus have negative purchase intentions by recognizing more pain in payment. And in Study 2 examining the role of social norms, we confirm that social norms reduce consumers' perception of the spending pain. In other words, social norms play a role in mitigating the negative effects of art infusion, thereby increasing the likelihood of purchasing by consumers.
