Abstract

The independent variables of this study were fading style of incomplete examples(backward or forward) and presentation unit of incomplete example (problem-size, substep-size). The study investigated if those variables have effect on cognitive skill acquisition, and if there exist interaction effect between the two variables. An experiment was implemented on 91 high school students from big cities to obtain the answer for the questions in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four instructional conditions, where participants studied a topic, 'ellipsis' from mathematics. The instruction was delivered through computer to the participants. Dependent variables were measured in immediate posttest and 24 hours delayed test. Items in each test were further divided into items that measured near-transfer or far-transfer. Results showed that there is a statistically significant main effect only due to presentation unit of incomplete examples on near transfer items in immediate posttest. Participants in problem-size showed higher scores than those in substep-size in the test. None of other conditions showed statistically significant difference on any measure either in immediate posttest or delayed posttest. However, a detailed analysis of results showed that there might be an interaction effect between two independent variables despite results of this study failed to show any statistically significant difference. The study recommends to employ problem-size presentation of incomplete example rather than substep-size as an instructional strategy that helps smooth transition of learners from initial stage to later stage of cognitive skill acquisition. The study also suggests further studies that may show clearer answers on related issues, especially on the possible interaction effect of two independent variables in this study.
