Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of adaptive instruction optimized to leaner expertise and presentation modes of process-oriented WOEs on instructional efficiency. It also aimed to examine whether the bimodal process-oriented WOE further control extraneous cognitive load and thereby positively impact on instructional efficiency. For this purpose, an online problem solving environment was developed. 112 undergraduate students participated in this experiment. They were randomly assigned into one of the four groups; adaptive bimodal WOE, adaptive unimodal WOE, fixed bimodal WOE, and fixed unimodal WOE groups. Of them, data from 96 students were used for ANCOVA with the pretest results as a covariate. According to the findings, the adaptive groups showed significantly higher instructional efficiency and lower cognitive load. There was no significant difference between the bimodal and the unimodal process-oriented WOE groups in instructional efficiency, but there was a significant difference in cognitive load at an alpha level of .10. In addition, the bimodal process-oriented WOE groups in both adaptive and fixed instruction groups showed higher instructional efficiency. These results seem to imply positive modality effect. Therefore, it is thought that the adaptive instruction and the bimodal process-oriented WOE effectively controlled cognitive load and improved learner expertise in the domain. These findings are particularly important as excessive cognitive load prohibits successful learning experience. The insight gained though this study may inform instructional designers seeking to enhance their understanding of efficient instructional design.
