Abstract

This study examines how elementary school teachers interact with AI, while designing learner-centered social studies lessons and identifies differences in AI usage at each stage. Data from 10 teachers were analyzed using Ordered Network Analysis (ONA) to visualize and quantitatively analyze the interaction flow. The findings showed that ‘Lesson Planning’ was a central activity, with frequent patterns where teachers either accepted or rejected AI responses before drafting lesson plans. By stage, the brainstorming stage involved active interactions of ‘Initial Prompting’ and ‘Rejecting AI Response,’ while AI interactions decreased in the conclusion stage and teacher-driven autonomous writing was more prominent. In the introduction, development, and assessment stages, the practical use of AI—accepting its information and incorporating it into lesson plans—was central, with particularly high acceptance rates of AI responses in the development and assessment stages. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed significant differences between the brainstorming-conclusion, brainstorming-assessment, and conclusion-assessment stages, that teachers vary their AI usage strategies depending on the lesson design stage. The brainstorming stage showed collaborative idea generation with AI, while the conclusion stage emphasized the teacher’s judgment. This study empirically highlights the processual characteristics of teacher-AI collaboration and is meaningful in that it provides foundational data for developing AI-based support systems for learner-centered lesson design.
