A Study on the Three Forms of Secretary in the Dramatic Subgenre of Lope's Plays, ‘comedia de secretario’

Founded by Lope de Vega, the leading Spanish playwright of the 17th century, ‘comedia de secretario’ is a dramatic subgenre that has yet to be fully studied. The main character of this dramatic subgenre should be a secretary of noble status, and therefore play a key role in the development of dramatic events, and his relationship with his master should be the main motif of dramatic events. Lope created the plays of ‘comedia de secretario’ based on his long experience as a secretary, creating images of various forms of secretary. Examples include the overly high-minded secretary in El mayordomo de la duquesa de Amalfi, the indecisive and incompetent secretary described in El perro del hortelano, and the reckless secretary presented in Servir a señor discreto. Through this, Lope intended to convey a message that a desirable secretary should not be too high-minded, indecisive, incompetent, or show reckless thoughts and actions. These types of secretaries are necessarily harmful to their owners and others.
