Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop and validate an instrument for assessing media literacy among middle school students in the digital media environment. As digital technologies and social media continue to expand rapidly, middle school students, as early adolescents, need the ability to critically analyze, ethically use, and creatively produce media messages, highlighting the need for a valid and reliable measurement tool. Preliminary items were generated through a comprehensive review of previous studies, refined through expert evaluations, and revised based on a pilot test. The main survey was conducted with 603 middle school students nationwide. Data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, which identified 28 items across six factors: media access, comprehension, critical analysis, creative expression, communication, and ethical attitude. The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated an acceptable model fit, and reliability indices including Cronbach’s α, average variance extracted (AVE), and composite reliability (CR) met recommended thresholds, confirming the instrument’s robustness. The developed tool can be applied in schools to diagnose students’ media literacy levels, evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs, and provide a standardized framework for comparative analysis. Academically, the findings extend media literacy measurement to middle school learners—a group often overlooked in prior research. Practically, the instrument supports evidence-based curriculum design and policy development tailored to middle school learners in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
