Abstract

This study aimed to investigate cognitive and emotional regulation occurring in the learning community and explore changes in regulation over time. For this study, the conversations of three teams who participated in the learning community program of A university were recorded at the beginning, middle, and end of the online learning process. The discourse was coded for cognitive regulation (planning, monitoring, evaluation) and emotional regulation(monitoring, control), and analyzed with Epistemic Network Analysis. The results showed that each learning community had a different network in terms of regulations. Group A, which aimed to get a high achievement, showed a high weight of co-occurrence between monitoring of cognitive regulation and control of emotional regulation. Group B, which created a start-up plan for winning the contest, revealed a high weight of co-occurrence between monitoring of cognitive regulation and control of emotional regulation. Group C, which produced a specific video, showed a high weight of co-occurrence between the monitoring, planning, and evaluation of cognitive regulation. Second, the network of each learning community changed differently over time. This study explored the connection structures of regulatory behaviors using epistemic network analysis, which derived more persuasive results by quantifying and visualizing the qualitative data.
