Abstract

This study presents a case of a digital writing course integrating generative AI and Individualized tutoring sessions into the curriculum and evaluates its outcomes through an analysis of student satisfaction and writing performance. The study was conducted with a course offered during the first semester of 2024 at University A, located in the Seoul metropolitan area. The course included a series of expert lectures on generative AI, writing practice sessions, and individualized tutoring sessions with professional tutors. A satisfaction survey was conducted at the end of the semester and analyzed. Additionally, scores from writing assignments submitted during tutoring sessions were analyzed using a latent growth model. The findings indicate that students perceived an improvement in their writing skills through the digital writing course, with high satisfaction reported for both the individualized guidance from professional tutors and the weekly expert lectures. The latent growth model analysis of the writing assignment performance revealed a general upward trend, with significant individual differences in initial levels and growth rates. Furthermore, it was empirically confirmed that, despite initial differences in assignment performance among students, writing skills improved at their own pace as tutoring sessions progressed. Detailed analysis also identified patterns of change in subcategories such as topic, structure, expression, and grammar. Based on the results, this study discusses the necessity, significance, and educational implications of a new course design that considers individual differences.
