Abstract

This study explored the differences in students’ perceived media richness (immediacy of feedback, multiple cues, language variety, and personalization), social presence, and flow between lecture types (offline vs. online). Additionally, it examined the structural relationships between lecture type, perceived media richness, social presence, and flow. For this purpose, a single-factor experiment was conducted with 128 undergraduate students enrolled at a four-year comprehensive university in Seoul, comparing two groups: an offline lecture group (n=66) and an online real-time streaming lecture group (n=62) that utilized recorded videos of the offline lectures. Specifically, the study compared students’ perceived media richness, social presence, and flow between lecture types, and set lecture type as the independent variable, perceived media richness and social presence as mediators, and flow as the dependent variable. The results revealed, first, that there were statistically significant differences in perceived media richness, social presence, and flow between the lecture conditions. Despite delivering the same lecture content, students perceived higher media richness (immediacy of feedback, multiple cues, language variety, and personalization), social presence, and flow in offline lectures than in online lectures. Second, the relationship between lecture type and student flow was fully mediated by perceived media richness and social presence. This study empirically examined the effectiveness of online and offline lectures through an experiment and identified the process by which lecture type influenced student flow through perceived media richness and social presence.
