Abstract
[Purpose] This paper investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the dynamic correlation and volatility spillovers between stock prices and exchange rates in the BRIC countries. [Methodology] This study uses DCC-GARCH, BEKK-GARCH and MS-VAR models. [Findings] This study finds that there is a significant negative dynamic relationship between stock returns and exchange rates in the BRIC countries, except for Brazil and Russia, and significant residual shock or volatility shock spillovers in the BRIC countries, except for Brazil, with robustness tests across variables, as well as a significant dynamic relationship between regimes. Moreover, these relationships are strengthened in the early stages of the closure triggered by the COVID-19. Overall, the results of this study suggest that there was a significant risk transmission between the two markets during the COVID-19, which strengthened the cross-regime dynamic relationship between the stock market and the foreign exchange market, negatively affecting the country's international competitiveness, while simultaneously depressing domestic stock returns and leading to capital outflows, which in turn pushed up the exchange rate. [Implications] Understanding the dynamics between stock prices and exchange rates can help investors make better decisions about portfolio diversification and hedging strategies, guide policymakers in formulating effective policies to stabilize financial markets, and provide valuable insights for formulating effective responses during financial crises through the study of intermarket interactions.
