Abstract

This study examined the impact of mothers’ everyday rules on their children’s social competence and antisocial behavior problems. Participants were 248 mothers living in Seoul or Gyeonggi-do, Korea and descriptive, t-test, correlation, multiple regression analysis were conducted. The results are as follows: First, mothers’ everyday rules, children’s social competence and antisocial behavior problems were varied according to the children's age difference. Second, mothers’ everyday rules had a statistically significant positive correlation with younger children’s social competence, but negative correlation with younger children’s antisocial behavior problems. Third, mothers’ everyday rules had a positive influence on children’s social competence. Fourth, the sub-factors of mothers’ everyday rules, personal, social-conventional rules had a negative influence on younger children’s antisocial behavior problems. On the other hand, in the case of older children, the sub-factors of mothers’ everyday rules, personal, social-conventional, moral rules had a negative influence on children’s antisocial behavior problems, but practical rules had a positive influence to that.
