Abstract

Jun, T.W., & Shin, Y.A. The influence of exercise intensity on telomere length in white blood cell, MDA, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Exercise Science, 16(2): 75-84, 2007. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in mean TRF length in white blood cell, the oxidative stress and antioxidants enzymes activities in response to moderate and high exercise intensities. Ten sedentary healthy middle aged women(46.81±6.43 years old)participated in this study. They performed 60% and 80% VO2max treadmill exercise. The exercise duration was adjusted so that the energy expenditure was equal in all subjects(400kcal). Blood sample of 20ml was drawn from antecubital veins for measuring telomere length, MDA, SOD, and GPx before and after exercise test. The results can be summarized as follows. The mean TRF length was significantly reduced immediately after exercise in both 60% and 80% VO2max. Moreover, plasma MDA level was significantly increased, and SOD activity was significantly decreased after exercise. There was no difference between 60% and 80% VO2max, in terms of mean TRF length, MDA, SOD, and GPx activity. These findings suggest that physical stress from energy expenditure over 400kcal is significantly associated with higher oxidative stress, lower antioxidant enzymes activities and shortening telomere length in peripheral white blood cells. Also, activated T cells with shortened telomeres mobilized from peripheral reservoirs might have some influence over telomere shortening.* 이 연구는 2005년 정부재원(교육인적자원부 학술연구조성사업)으로 한국학술진흥재단의 선도연구지원을 받아 연구되었음(KRF-2005-041-G00154)
