Abstract

This study aims to review the research on inferential comprehension assessments and offer implications for decision-making and progress-monitoring methods for students with learning difficulties and disabilities. The study analyzed 24 journal articles published from 2000 to 2020 to identify the study sample, sub-skills of inferential comprehension, and assessment characteristics. Inferential comprehension studies for students with learning difficulties and disabilities have increased significantly since 2010 and have mainly focused on inferential comprehension characteristics. The majority of research on inferential comprehension assessments measured bridging and elaborative inferences. Most studies measure inferential comprehension skills at paragraph level. In most studies, the number of test questions was 10-20 with no time limit. Based on these results, the author concludes by discussing implications for the development of inferential comprehension assessments and issues to be addressed in future research.
