민주적 학교공동체에 관한 연구 : 듀이 철학과 실험학교를 중심으로

이 연구는 한국 교육에서 중점적으로 추진하는 협동 교육이 딜레마에 빠진 원인을 공동체 철학에 대한 이해의부재로 보고, 듀이의 민주적 공동체 철학을 탐구하며 민주적 학교공동체의 원리를 이해하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 목적을 성취하기 위해 먼저 듀이의 민주적 공동체 철학이 담긴 대표적인 저서인 『학교와 사회』, 『민주주의와교육』, 『경험과 교육』을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이 과정에서 민주주의와 공동체 교육에 대한 듀이의 사상이 시간이지남에 따라서 어떻게 발전하였는지를 확인하였다. 그리고 듀이가 그의 민주적 공동체 철학을 실제로 적용하고 실험하였던 ‘실험학교’의 운영 전반을 살펴보았고 민주적 공동체로서의 학교의 모습이 어떠했는지를 검토하였다. 더 나아가본 연구는 듀이의 철학과 실험학교를 통하여 이해한 바람직한 민주적 학교공동체란 삶의 과정에서 진정으로 협력적배움이 일어나는 곳임을 밝힌다. 그리고 마지막으로 오늘날의 한국교육에 줄 수 있는 시사점을 제의하였다.
Abstract
This study states that the reason the cooperative education that the Korean educational system seeks to prioritize has fallen into a dilemma is because it lacks a sufficient understanding of the philosophy of community. This study also examines Dewey’s view on democratic school communities and aims to understand its associated principles. To accomplish this goal, Dewey’s major works on education, “The School and Society” (1899), “Democracy and Education” (1916), and “Experience and Education” (1938) are philosophically examined. In so doing, we were able to ascertain how Dewey’s ideas regarding democracy and community education developed over time. This paper also examines the overall operation of the “Experimental School,” where Dewey applied and experimented with his democratic community philosophy in practice, to view the school’s features as a democratic community. Finally, this study reveals that a desirable democratic school community, as understood through Dewey's philosophy and experimental school, is a place where true cooperative learning takes place in the course of life. Based on this, we propose implications for modern Korean education.
