Abstract

This study examines the responses of 104 participants in “a reciprocal peer coaching program between faculty members” operated by “the Center for Teaching and Learning(CTL)” at a university in Chungcheongnam-do, during three consecutive semesters(beginning 2021 spring semester). According to participants’ responses, “the satisfaction rate” scored an average of 4.67 points (out of 5) and the percentage of “the willingness to re-participate” was 55.8%. Based on the analysis of the reports submitted by the participants, this study investigates the reasons for the encouraging responses to “the reciprocal peer coaching program.” The reports were analyzed using “the grounded theory” of the qualitative study with a focus on participants’ experiences and responses. The categories were formed after coding using NVivo, a program that analyzes qualitative research. According to the results, the keywords for the topics discussed in the program can be summed up as the “teaching-learning design methods,” “learner attitudes,” and “inner values of the teachers.” Further, the keywords for the changes recognized by the participating faculty members can be explained in terms of “the class lecture,” “relationship” and “individual.” Thus, the participants in the “reciprocal peer coaching program” evaluated the program positively because of the following two aspects. First, they shared and sympathized with the “pedagogical aspect” related to teaching and learning design and also the “personal aspect” including the inner human side such as the relationship, emotion, motivation, attitude of teachers and learners. These results highlight the importance of rethinking the essence of education.
