Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the participation experiences of university faculty involved in extra-curricular programs and to examine how these experiences contribute to their professional and personal growth. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted with five faculty members who participated in a team-based, project-oriented program at A University, a research-intensive institution in Seoul. The findings indicated that faculty growth through participation in extracurricular programs manifested along two main dimensions. First, participants experienced growth as educators, including overcoming preconceived notions about students, expanding their understanding of learning, and reconstructing their instructional practices through interactions with colleagues. Second, participants experienced growth as individuals, such as rediscovering their strengths and preferences, strengthening their identity as educators, and developing a sense of belonging within the university community. These findings suggest that faculty growth extends beyond technical skill development and represents a processual and interpretive phenomenon in which identity and meaning are reconstructed through experience, interaction, and reflection. Based on these results, the study discusses policy implications for fostering faculty growth in higher education institutions.
