Abstract
In the era of the fourth Industrial Revolution, universities are overemphasizing the function of nurturing students who can adapt well to rapid social changes. This study begins by exploring this issue. Is a university a place for academic research and truth-seeking, or a place for professional job training? This question is fundamentally connected to the discussion on the origins and development of universities. From this perspective, this study examines the origins of medieval universities and their functions and roles that have historically developed across different eras. Deliberations on the purpose of higher education began in ancient Greece, and as we entered the Middle Ages, the ideology of universities has continued to the present day, with the perspective of pursuing educational ideals and the practical stance being fused and sometimes conflicting. Today, universities cannot ignore the essential task of nurturing professionals who can adapt to the rapid social changes of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, throughout history, universities have not always embraced changes driven by new knowledge, information, and technology.. Rather, they placed greater importance on nurturing human beings who could lead the changes of the era. Therefore, today's universities should not unconditionally accept the capabilities that future society demands, but should also provide opportunities for people to develop the ability and skills to make correct judgments and critical perspectives. This discussion provides an opportunity to reflect on the functions and roles of universities in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
