Abstract
This study aimed to compare and analyze the average differences between groups for overall happiness, psychological pain, and related variables of youth (20-39 years old), middle-aged (40-64 years old), and older adult (65 years old or older) groups among single-person households. For this, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, and one-way analysis of variance were performed. The analysis indicated that the youth population was primarily composed of unmarried workers residing in the metropolitan area, while the elderly population largely consisted of local residents who were either divorced or had lost their spouses. The middle-aged group had characteristics of both youth and older adult groups. The analysis revealed significant mean differences for several items between groups. Among them, the item that showed the greatest difference was the meaning of life between the youth and older adult groups, followed by the overall happiness of the youth and middle-aged groups. The average of the youth group was high for most items of overall happiness and life evaluation, but the average of the older adult group was higher for most items of group reliability, trust in people, and psychological pain. The middle-aged group showed some differences from the youth or older adult groups by item. These results suggest significant differences in psychological conditions such as loneliness, anxiety, depression, reliability, and overall happiness in single-person households and highlight the need for specialized support and intervention strategies for each demographic. This study is expected to contribute to the establishment of customized policies and development of support services for single-person households by providing an in-depth understanding of the characteristics and needs of single-person households by age.
