Abstract

The purpose of this study was to classify latent profile types based on socioeconomic status and analyze the factors influencing digital literacy among middle school students in each profile. Using data from the Gyeonggi School Education Survey, the study analyzed 5,424 third-year middle school students. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was employed to reflect the multidimensional aspects of socioeconomic status, including household income, cultural activities with children, and family composition. The findings identified three latent profile types: (1) high economic and cultural capital, (2) low economic and cultural capital, and (3) moderate economic and cultural capital. Statistically significant differences were observed in digital literacy levels across the latent profiles, with the highest levels found in the group with high economic and cultural capital. The analysis of factors affecting digital literacy revealed that, regardless of profile type, the time spent using electronic devices for learning purposes, digital literacy education, and self-directed learning ability had a universally positive impact. Notably, in the group with high economic and cultural capital, the home online learning environment and parental involvement in school activities significantly influenced digital literacy. However, these factors did not have a significant effect on the other profile groups, highlighting the key differences. These findings suggest the need for a tailored approach to foster digital literacy among middle school students, considering their socioeconomic backgrounds.
