Abstract
This study aims to explore how infant and preschool teachers perceive toys through metaphor analysis. An online survey was conducted with 191 early childhood teachers working in kindergartens and childcare centers in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, and the collected responses were categorized following established metaphor analysis procedures. The analysis identified seven categories representing teachers’ perceptions of toys: assistants for exploration and learning; foundations for growth and development; bridges for relationships and communication; gifts of happiness and emotional comfort; pathways for creativity and self-expression; essential elements of daily life; and tools for play. Notably, infant teachers were more likely to perceive toys as mediators that support relationship building and were relatively less likely to view them as tools for facilitating exploration and learning. In contrast, preschool teachers more strongly emphasized the role of toys in fostering creativity and facilitating self-expression, rather than regarding them as mere play materials. These findings indicate that teachers interpret the functions and values of toys differently depending on children’s developmental stages. Based on these insights, this study provides foundational data to enhance teachers’ understanding of the characteristics and uses of developmentally appropriate toys and to strengthen their play-supporting competencies in implementing a play-centered curriculum.
