본 연구는 교양 영어 수업에서 외국인 유학생 36명을 대상으로 영어 웹툰의 활용이 학습자들의 읽기 이해력과문화 이해도에 미치는 영향을 고찰하고자 하였고 영어 웹툰의 활용에 대한 외국인 유학생들의 태도와 인식을 파악하고자하였다. 이를 통해 언어 능력과 문화 이해 학습을 위한 학습 자료로써 영어 웹툰의 활용 가능성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 연구 방법은 읽기 이해력 사전 및 사후 테스트, 문화 이해도 사전 및 사후 테스트, 설문조사를 통해 정량적 분석과정성적 분석을 혼합하였다. 연구 결과 외국인 유학생들을 대상으로 한 영어 웹툰 기반의 영어 수업은 학습자들의읽기 이해력과 문화 이해도 향상에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 외국인 유학생들은 영어 웹툰 활용이영어 읽기 학습에 대한 흥미 유발, 타국 생활과 문화 적응에 대한 자신감 증진, 영어 웹툰을 통한 학습 지속 의향성에긍정적 반응을 나타냈다. 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 한 제2언어 교실에서 영어 웹툰의 사용은 더욱 활성화될 필요가있으며 이를 위한 교육적 제언을 제공하였다.
Abstract
This study investigated the effects of using English webtoons on the reading comprehension and cultural understanding of 36 international students enrolled in a liberal arts English class. It also examined learners’ attitudes and perceptions toward the use of English webtoons. The study aimed to explore the pedagogical potential of English webtoons as instructional materials for developing both language proficiency and cultural competence. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analyses of pre- and post-tests measuring reading comprehension and cultural understanding with qualitative insights derived from a perception survey. The findings revealed that webtoon-based English instruction had a significant positive effect on reading comprehension and cultural understanding among international students. In addition, participants expressed positive attitudes toward the use of webtoons, reporting increased interest in English reading, greater confidence in adapting to life and culture in a foreign country, and a strong willingness to continue learning through English webtoons. These results suggest that the integration of English webtoons into second language classrooms for international students warrants further promotion, and several educational implications are proposed.
