Abstract
In today's rapidly changing society, it is crucial for elementary school students to develop the competencies needed to adapt to diverse career transitions and tasks. This study examined the relationship between social and internal factors related to career adaptability development in upper elementary school students, drawing from literature on career development learning and Career Construction Theory. Specifically, it explored the mediating effect of positive psychological capital on the relationship between perceived parental career support, friend and teacher support, and career adaptability among upper-elementary students. Data were collected from 351 fifth- and sixth-grade students in Seoul and subsequently analyzed. The main findings are as follows: First, positive correlations were found among perceived parental career support, social support from friends and teachers, career adaptability, and positive psychological capital. Second, perceived parental career support and friend/teacher social support had a direct effect on career adaptability. Third, positive psychological capital mediated the relationship between parental and friend support and career adaptability but did not mediate the relationship between teacher support and career adaptability. These results highlight the importance of parental and friend support as positive psychological resources for developing career adaptability among upper elementary school students.
