Abstract

This study aimed to explore the role of emotions experienced by pre-service teachers during their teaching practicum in the process of forming and reshaping their teacher identities. A qualitative case study was conducted with four pre-service teachers enrolled in universities in the metropolitan area, analySing various emotional episodes they encountered during their practicum and the changes in their teacher identities resulting from these experiences. The findings revealed that pre-service teachers experienced a range of positive and negative emotions, which played three key functions in the process of teacher identity formation. First, emotions prompted reflective self-examination, leading pre-service teachers to idealiSe their existing identities. Second, in situations where their teacher identities were threatened, emotions triggered strategic mechanisms such as psychological distancing, helping to maintain and protect their existing identities. Third, emotions encouraged the exploration of new teaching methods and the reconstruction of relationships with students, contributing to the flexible expansion of their existing identities. These results highlight the significant role emotions play in teacher identity formation and transformation, suggesting the need for an emotionally sensitive approach in the design and implementation of pre-service teacher education practicum programs.
