Abstract

This study aims to overcome the limitations of previous research on spatial restructuring, which often focused solely on physical improvements and remained at the level of case presentation. By conducting an in-depth qualitative analysis of elementary school teachers’ experiences, the study proposes spatial typologies that reflect educational contexts. Two elementary schools in Seoul were selected as research sites, and qualitative data were collected through focus group interviews, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and field observations. The analysis identified key factors influencing learning space design and critical issues in the spatial restructuring process. Findings revealed that (1) subject-specific teaching methods shaped spatial design needs —for example, creative and open spaces for arts and physical education, and collaborative and experimental spaces for subjects like language, math, and science; (2) differences in teaching approaches by grade level significantly influenced space utilization, with lower grades requiring experience-based environments and upper grades needing project-based and collaborative learning spaces; (3) the level of stakeholder participation, particularly teachers, was a critical factor in ensuring the effectiveness of spatial restructuring; and (4) practical challenges such as budget constraints, complex administrative procedures, and the coordination of diverse stakeholder interests emerged as key issues. These findings underscore the need for policy improvements to support more effective educational space design.
