Abstract

This study explored the early university and learning experiences of first-year international students at S University in Seoul to identify practical ways to support their adaptation. In-depth interviews were conducted and qualitative data were used to develop personas and journey maps, which underwent two rounds of expert validation involving five reviewers. Three representative persona types were identified, highlighting the key variables such as language ability, learning motivation, sense of belonging, and study-abroad preparedness. The findings showed that the students faced the dual challenges of adapting to Korean academic culture and coping with language barriers. Language difficulties often reduce participation in curricular and co-curricular activities, leading to academic demotivation and social isolation. Based on these insights, this study recommends orientation and Korean-language mentoring programs, greater interactions between Korean and international students, bilingual co-curricular programs, and AI-based multilingual academic information systems. By visualizing these complex experiences, this study offers groundwork for building a more inclusive learning environment for international students.
