Abstract

This study explored school counselors’ experiences and coping strategies regarding multiple role demands across school levels (elementary and secondary). Focus group interviews (FGIs) were conducted with 12 school counselors(six elementary and six secondary counselors) who had more than 3 years of school counseling experience and had encountered multiple role experiences. Each group participated in 90-minute and 120-minute sessions. The interview transcripts were analyzed through coding and categorization based on focus group analysis procedures. The analysis yielded 4 overarching themes, 9 subthemes, and 33 detailed categories. The major themes were: (1) contextual characteristics of multiple roles, (2) internal experiences and psychological conflicts caused by multiple roles, (3) coping strategies and practical efforts, and (4) professional growth and institutional needs emerging from multiple role experiences. Elementary school counselors primarily experienced close-contact multiple roles centered on care anddaily-life support. Meanwhile, secondary school counselors predominantly engaged in control-oriented multiple roles focusing on discipline, evaluation, and committee work. Counselors reported concerns about potential harm to the counseling relationship, identity conflicts, and emotional exhaustion. To cope with these challenges, they adopted a ‘firm boundary–flexible communication’ strategy, including structured counseling, boundary setting, and collaboration with peers and external agencies. Moreover, the multiple role experiences served as opportunities for professional growth by expanding their expertise through diverse relational and counseling tasks. This study highlights how professional school counselors’ multiple role experiences differ by school level and suggests a cyclical model: “multiple roles - boundary management - protection of the counseling relationship and competence expansion - identity reinforcement”. The findings emphasize that while multiple roles may act as a potential risk factor for burnout, they can also foster professional identity development. Institutional support systems are therefore essential to safeguard counselors’ professionalism and reduce excessive role demands.
